News Date: 14th February 2012

The United Front Party (UFP), on Monday appealed to the National Peace Council (NPC) and other peace advocate institutions to caution against the use of intemperate languages by politicians to preserve Ghana’s peace.

A statement signed by Communication Directorate of UFP, Nana Kusi-Poku Listowell, copied to Ghana News Agency (GNA), in Accra on Monday called on the National Peace Council (NPC), Christian Council of Ghana, Ahmadiyya Muslim Movement, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Office of The Chief Imam, National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches, Ghana Network for Peace Building, Afrikania Mission, Human Resource Consultants, Evangelists in Ghana, and all peace preachers to work without fear of intimidation and maintain and sustain peace in the country.

It said: "We wish to express our optimism and hope that major steps would be taken by the above-mentioned institutions, which have the opportunity to serve the country, to ensure peace and stability, needed for development and call political parties to order as Ghana gets ready for pulls this year.

"Though Ghana has enjoyed peace since independence and has always gotten pleasure from tranquility since the inception of the multi-party democracy, it is as if politics in Ghana now is getting muddier than it has always been since 1992, hence the need to put the nation to order.

The statement said the escalating spate of rabble-rousing commentary from political parties as the country gears up for the general election this year, was awfully.

It said: "It would be good if the people of Ghana realise the need for peace. Some of Ghana’s political leaders make careless statements without being aware that one of such unguarded statements can bring violence and throw the whole country in commotion.

"We crave to note that the Constitution of Ghana, which is the supreme law of the land, gives every President a four-year mandate, renewable once through elections."

The statement noted that most conflicts in other parts of the world were generated by people who wanted to achieve their parochial interests at the expense of their countries.
